Many pesticides and other chemicals commonly used in agriculture can seriously harm bees' health. This not only causes economic losses to beekeepers but also severely affects the yields of insect-pollinated crops. While growers must resort to these chemicals to protect their crops, there are steps they can take to protect bees. Experts at the University of Massachusetts Amherst offer 7 ways to protect bees:
1. Communicate with the beekeeper in time. Communicate with the beekeeper in time before using pesticides, and reserve enough time for the beekeeper to transfer the bee colony.
2. Reduce the use of pesticides during the flowering period. Do not spray pesticides unless necessary during the flowering period of crops to avoid pesticide residues on the flowers.
3. To avoid pesticide spray drift, pay attention to the wind direction and wind speed when spraying pesticides to reduce unnecessary diffusion of pesticides and reduce the risk of bee poisoning. Reducing spray pressure or changing nozzles to increase droplet size can help reduce spray drift.
4. Choose pesticides that are harmless to bees. Different formulas of pesticides with the same effect may have very different effects on bees.
5. Pesticide residue activity Low pesticide residue activity is one of the important considerations for protecting bees. For example, if it degrades within a few hours, the harm to bees will be minimal.
6. Pesticide application time Use pesticides when bees are not actively foraging, such as in the evening or early morning.
7. Understand chemicals Before using any chemical, read the label carefully and follow the instructions carefully.
